The Philippine Institute of Volcanology (Philvocs) raised to alert level 4 last sunday afternoon out of the maximum of five alert levels. - meaning that the major eruption of Mayon Volcano is possible within days.
Philvocs recomended an Extended Danger Zone from the Summit to eigth kilometers (southern sector) and seven kilometers (north sector) of Mayon Volcano in Albay Province, to ensure the safety of the public.
Philvocs and Seismology said that near the Mayon Volcano increased in number and size in the past 24 hours, with tha total of 1,942 volcanic earthquakes detected. that's why they raised the alert level 4 from alert level 2 last friday morning.
More than 9,200 families evacuated by the Provincial Disaster Coordinating Council to the Government Evacuation Center as of Monday morning, December 21, 2009.
The Province is also one of the province in the Philippines visited by 22 typhoons this year including typhoon Ondoy and Peping which submerged large area of Northern Luzon, Philippines.
The Philvocs say that the Mayon Volcano is much safer than Mt. Pinatubo compared to their eruption.
