Noong unang panahon, ang mga tao sa silangan ay nagpupunta pa sa kanluran upang makipagpalitan ng kalakal. Ang mga katutubo sa silangan ay maraming asukal na naimbak. Ito ang ipinamamalit nila upang makakuha naman ng asin. Sapagkat higit na nangangailangan ng asin ang silangan, ang mga katutubo na ang nagpupunta sa kabilang ibayo ng dagat. Ang problemang pagpunta sa kabilang dagat at iniinda ng mga katutubo. May nakapagpayong dapat magpatulong na sila kay Ang-ngalo upang mabawasan ang kanilang kapaguran.

Isang higante si Ang-ngalo. Nakikita ang mga binti niya kapag nakagiha at inilatag ang buong katawan sa karagatan. Kapag tumayo naman ang tuhod lang niya ang pinakamatirik na bundok na lapitan niya. Pero kahit isang bambuhalang higante, mabait at matulungin siya.

Napapayag ng mga tao na ilatag ni Ang-ngalo ang mga binti sa karagatan. Nanulay sa mga binti ng higante ang mga katutubo upang ihatid ang saku-sakong asukal bilang pamalit ng saku-sako ring asin na kinakailangan.

Noong unang panahon, may mag-asawang Hari at Reyna sa pampang ng kanilang lawa ng Buhi. Sila ay nagtayo ng magandang palasyo. Sila ay kina-iingitan ng ibang Hari. Siya’y natakam at kumain. Nasarapan ang Reyna sa katas nito at ang karamdaman niya ay gumaling. Tuwang-tuwa ang Hari at umasa na di magtatagal ay magkakaroon din ng tagapagmana ang kanyang kaharian.

Isang gabi, isang malakas na bagyo ang dumating. May kidlat at kulog, lumaki ang tubig at sinundan pa ng malakas na lindol. Ilang araw din na nagsungit ang panahon at umapaw ang tubig sa paligid ng palasyo na para bang isang delubyo. Sa wakas tumigil din ang bagyo. Ang mga tao ay nagtaka dahil nakita nila na ang lawa ng Buhi ay punong-puno ng maliliit na isda na noon pa lang nila nakita. Ipinaalam nila ang kanilang nakita sa mag-asawang Hari at Reyna. “Naalala ba ninyo,” sabi ng Hari na natatawa, “noong nagdaang buwan, bago pa bumagyo at lumindol, isang bungang-kahoy ang nagustuhan ang Reyna. Ito ang suha. Kinain niya ito, sinipsip ang masarap at matamis na katas at ang sepal ay dito sa lawa na ito itinapon. Walang salang nagbinhi ang mga sepal ng suha at sumigaw ang pagkaliliit na isdang ito. Tingnan nioy,” sabi ng Hari. “Pagmasdan ninyong mabuti at makikitang ang maliit na katawan ng isda ay kahugis ng butil ng suha.” Magbuhat noon, ang maliliit na isdang ito ay naglipana sa lawa ng Buhi, sa Camarines Sur sa parting Bicol.

Maraming tao ang nagtataka at humahanga sa magagandang kulay ng bahag-hari. Subalit hindi nila matiyak ang totoong pinagmulan nito. Sabi ng mga matatanda na tuwing lalabas ang bahag-hari, nagbibigay ito ng pahiwatig sa tao. Makalipas ang ilang libong taon, maraming nilikha ang naghahari sa kalupaan. Ang pamumuhay nila ay naging masaya at ang bawat isa ay nagmamahalan.

Lumipas ang ilang taon, naiba ang takbo ng kanilang buhay. Naging makasalanan at gumulo ang mga tao. Naghari ang kasamaan, iilan lamang sa knaila ang naging mabubuting tao. Ang Dakilnag lumikha ay hindi na natiis ang nangyayari sa mundo. Isang araw nagpadala ito ng sugo para iparating sa mga tao na magsisi na sila sa kanilang mga kasalanan at magbago.

Hindi pinakinggan ng mga tao ang sugo na ipinadala, sa halip ay pinagtawanan at sinaktan pa ito. Ang Dakilang lumikha ay nagalit sa mga tao dahil sa kanilang kalapastanganan.

Nang tumigil na ang malakas na ulan at humupa na ang baha ay muling umaliwalas ang langit. Mula sa langit ay natanaw nila ang may isang arko ang lumitaw at nagtataglay ito ng iba’t-ibang mga magagandang kulay. Nagdasal ang mga mabubuting tao at tunay na nananalig sa Dakilang lumikha at ang arkong may iba’t-ibang kulay ay tinawag na “Bahag-hari.” At hanggang ngayon ay makikita natin lumalabas ang Bahag-hari matapos umulan ng malakas. Harahil paalala ito ng Diyos na kung tuluyang magiging makasalanan ang mga tao’y muling malilipol ang mga masasama.

Si Isko ay isang magsasaka. Isang araw habang naglalakad mula sa kanyang tahanan patungong bayan upang mamili sa palengke ng mga gagamitin niya sa pagsasaka. Malayo-layo rin ang kanyang lalakbayin. Sa isang liblib na lugar na malapit sa may batis ay may narinig siyang isang malakas na iyak ng bata. Si Isko ay nagtataka kung papaano nagkaroon ng sanggol sa lugar na iyon. Hinanap niya ito hanggang sa ito’y kanyang natagpuan. Nagulat is Isko ng makita niya ang isang sanggol na hubo’t-hubad na nakahiga sa damuhan.

Dahil si Isko ay likas na maawain ay kinuha niya ang sanggol. “Sino kanyang ina na walang puso ang nag-iwan nito” sabi ni Isko. Naisip ni Isko na dahil sa bayan ang sanggol. Habang siya ay naglalakad, karga niya ang sanggol na patuloy ang pag-iyak, “Siguro ay giniginaw ang sanggol na ito,” ani Isko. Upang mabawasan ang ginaw ng sanggol ay kanyang binuksan ang pagkakabutones ng kanyang damit at ibinalot ang kawawang sanggol. Tumahan ang sanggol at ito naman ay ikinatuwa ni Isko.

Ilang saglit ang nakalipas ay nakaramdam si Isko na bahagyang kirot sa kanyang tagiliran. Ito’y sinawalang bahala niya sa pag-aakalang ni lalaro lamang ng sanggol ang kanyang sarili. Ilang sandali pa ay naramdaman niyang tila bumibigat ang sanggol. “kapag nagpatuloy pa ito ay ilalabas ko na sa loob ng aking damit.” Nang hindi na niya matagalan ay inilabas na niya ito at pinagmasdan. Ha!” halakhak ng halimaw. “Natikman ko rin ang iyong dugo.” Wika nito at ito’y biglang naglaho. Duguan ang tagiliran ni Isko. Kaya’t nagtungo siya sa bayan upang ipagamot ang kanyang sugat.

ANG KAMBING AT ANG UNGGOY

Isang araw, sa di-sinasadyang pagkakataon, ay nagkita si Kambing at si Unggoy. Hindi nalalaman ni Kambing ay matagal nang naiingit sa kanya si Unggoy. Kundangan ay mayroon siyang sungay. Si Unggoy ay wala. Kaya mas kinatatakutan ng marami si Kambing. Si Unggoy ay hindi.

“Kumusta, kaibigang Unggoy?” bati ni Kambing.

“Mabuti,” matamlay na tugon ni Unggoy.” Kaya lang, niloloko ako ng punungkahoy na ito!” at itinuro ang isang malapit na puno.

“Bakit, anong ginawa sa ioy?” nagugulumihanang usisa ni Kambing.

“Pinalo ako ng kanyang mga sanga. Saka pagkatapos ay pagtatawanan.” Ang akala ni Unggoy ay magagalit si Kambing at ipagtatanggol siya. Pero hindi kumikibo si Kambing.

Pamaya-maya ay nagsalita si Kambing. “Alam mo, kung ako ikaw e hindi na ako kikibo. Sino ang mapapagod sa ginagawa niya, e di siya rin! Basta layuan mo na lang siya.”

“mabibigo yata ako,” sumaloob ni Unggoy. Pagkaraan ng ilang sandali ay tila may naisip na paraan upang pagalitin sa Kambing. Kunwa’y pinalaki ang dibdib at ang turing, “Mas mabuti ang merong karangalan! Kung lolokohin ka lang ng iba, mabuti pang mamatay ka na! kaya hindi ko mapalalampas ang ginawa ng punong iya. Maging ikaw man!”

“Ako mna?” pabiglang sagot ni Kambing. “At bakit? Ano’ng sinasabi niya tungkol sa akin?”

“Masyado ka raw mayabang. Ipinagmamalaki mo raw iyang sungay mo na balewala naman! Babaliin daw niya ang sungay mong iyan!”

Nagalit si Kambing. Na lihim na ikinatuwa ni Unggoy. Mapalalampas ni Kambing na maloko ang iba pero hindi siya. Wala pang nakasasalbahe sa kanya kahit sino. Saka ngayon, isang punungkahoy lang na hindi makalakad at ni hindi makatakbo, ay pagsasalitaan siya ng ganoon! Nagpapanting na hinarap ni Kambing ang punongkahoy. “Sinabi mo nga ba iyon?” tanong ni Kambing sa puno.

Niglang umihip ang hangin. Gumalaw-galaw ang mga sanga ng punongkahoy. At parang tumawa ito nang gumawa ng ingay ang mga sanga at daho. Lalong nagalit si Kambing. Ang akala ay talagang niloloko siya ng punongkahoy. Mabilis na yumuko at sinugod ang puno. Malakas na sinuwag ito. Subalit matigas ang puno. Ni hindi siya naano. Ang sungay ni Kambing ang nabali. Nagtawa ang Unggoy sa nakita. Napinsala niya si Kambing na lihim na kinainggitan dahil sa sungay nito. Wala na, bali na ang sungay ni Kambing.

Nagkataon namang sa darating noon si Baboy. Nakita nito ang lahat ng nagyari. Nilapitan si kambing at ang wika, “Bakit mo sinuwag iyang puno? Wala naman siyang ginawa laban sa iyo?”

Ipinagtapat ni Kambing ang lahat. Wala siyang ipinaglihim.

Nang matalos ni baboy ang dahilan ay nagalit kay Unggoy kaya hinabol ito ng kagat. Pagkatapos, nang wala na si Unggoy, ay bumalik uli kay Kambing at ang sabi, “Tandaan mo, mula ngayon, huwag kang makikinig nang basta-basta sa sabi-sabi. Kailangan munang mapatunayan. Hindi mo baa lam na kaya lang sinabi ni Unggoy ay naiingit sa iyo?”

“Ganoon ba?” nabigkas ni Kambing.

“Oo, matagl ba. Kaya magtanda ka na mula ngayon. Ang nangyari sa iyo, ay magsilbi sanang isang aral.”

ALAMAT NG BUTIKI

Bagaman maliit pa sa darili ang butiki ay maituturing na katulong ng tao laban sa mga insektong pumapasok sa loob ng bahay. Hindi siya naninira ng anuman. At lalong hindi nananakit ng tao. Kaya, ang sinumang malagpakan o makapitan nito ay huwag titili o magtatatarang. Palisin lamang o ipagpag ang nakapitang damit at siya’y kusang mahuhulog.

Napansin ba ninyo na tuwing magtatakipsilim ay bumababa at humahalik sa lupa ang mga butiki, saan man sila naroroon? Alam ninyo ang dahilan? Naito…..

Noong araw, sa isang bayan sa katagalugan, ay may isang napakagandang binibini. Tawagin natin siyang Maria. Marami siyang manliligaw. Ang isa rito ay binatang bukid. Pangalanan naman natin siyang Tikyo.

Gaya ng dapat asaha, umiisip si Maria ng mga paraan ng pagsubok sa katapatan ng pag-ibig at katalinuhan ng kanyang mga tagahanga.

“Totoo ba, Tikyo, na ipagkakaloob mo sa akin ang anumang bagay na mahiling ko sa iyo?” tanong ng dalaga minsang silang nagkausap ni Tikyo.

“Oo, sa abot ng aking kahirapan,” maagap na tugon ng binata.

“Kung gayo’y dalhin mo sa akin ang puso ng iyong na,” matalinghagang hiling ni Maria.

“Ngayon din! Ngayon din!” ani Tikyon na hindi na nag-isip pa. pagkapaalam ay nagtutumulin siyang umuwi. Magdarapit-hapon na noon.

Pagdating sa kanila’y tuwiran niyang tinungo ang kusina. At dinampot ang naroong matalim na pisaw.

“Anak, me puto riyan sa pamingganan. Kumain ka,” masuyong wika ng kanyang ina nang maramdamang siya’y nasa kusina.

Hindi umimik si Tikyo. Sa halip ay marahang lumapit sa walang malay na ina. Hindi napansin ng matanda at sa isang kisap-mata’y natigpas ang leeg ng kahabag-habag na magulang. Ni hindi man nakapaghesusmariahosep ang sawimpalad na matanda.

Walang inaksayang sandali si Tikyo. Mabilis na biniyak ang dibdib ng bangkay at dinukot ang puso nito. Patakbo siyang pumanaong na hawak sa dalawang palad ang duguan, maliit, at halos pumipintig.

Sa isang nayon sa Bulakan, maraming-maraming taon na ang nakalilipas.

Mutyang-mutya sa mag-asawang Indo at Bebang ang kanilang kaisa-isang anak. Hangga’t maaari’y ayaw nilang pagawain ng anuman si Ana. Subalit ang likas na masipag na dalaga’y hindi nila mapigil tumulong sa mga Gawain sa bukid at sa loob ng bahay.

Palibhasa’y maganda, mabait at may-loob sa Diyos di-mabilang ang mga tagahanga ni Ana. Isa sa kanyang masugid na talisuyo ay si Aguedo.

Ulila nang lubos si Aguedo. Masipag siya, mabuting makipagkapwa, at mapagkumbaba. Hindi nga lamang siya kagandahang lalaki. Aging ang palayaw niya.

Mataas ang pangarap ni Mang Indo para sa kanyang “Prinsesa”. Ang nais niyang maging manugang ay isang binatang makisig at kung mangyayari’y anak-mayaman. Subalit si Aging din ang napili ni Anang pag-ukulan ng kanyang pagtatangi. Panakaw ang kanilang pag-uusap. Sa huli nlang pagniniig ay napagkasunduan nilang pagkatapos ng pag-ani, sa kabilugan ng buwan, ay pakakasal sila.

Galit nag alit si Mang Indo nang mabatid ang katotohanan. Mahigpit niyang iniutos sa anak na makipagkasira kay Aging.

“Patawarin ninyo ako, Ama, kung din rin lang si Aging ang makakaisang-palad ko’y magpapakatanda na akong dalaga.”

Nagsawalang-imik si Mang Indo. Ngunit umisip siya ng ibang paraan.

Isang gabing maliwanag ang buwan, samantalang nag-uusap ang magkasuyo sa tabi ng bintana ay bigla na lamang napaaray si Aging. Tinagpas ang kanyang kamay. Naputol yaon, Hinimatay si Ana.

Hindi naman nasiraan ng loob ang binata. Agaran niyang tinalian ng leteng ang itaas ng dumudugong bisig upang maampat ang daloy ng dugo. Gayunman siya ay nahilo sa dami ng dugong nawala. Nang muli siyang dumilat ay nasa kandungan na siya ng lumuluhang kasuyo.

“Sino kayang walang puso…ang tumasa sa’yong kamay?” humihikbing wika ni Ana.

“Baka i-isang ..k-karibak ko…”mang mahinang turing ng binata.

Wala silang kakutub-kutob na si Mang Indo ang tumagpas sa kamay ni Aging.

G-giliw,’ halos pabulong nang sabi ni Aging, “Kung sa-ka-ling… may mangyari… sa akin… ku-kunin mo’t …ingatan ang… a-aking p-puso!”

Lalong nag-iiyak si Ana. “Hindi! Hindi ka mamamatay, mahal ko!”

Datapwat patay na si Aging nang dumating ang albularyo. Natupad din ang kanyang habilin. Kinuha ang kanyang puso at isinilid sa isang garapon. Samantala, ang naputol na kamay ay itinago ni Ana.

Nang umuwi si Mang Indo at nakita ang pusong nasa garapon ay nagalit siya. “ayokong makita ‘yan dito! Itapon n’yo !” aniya.

Palihim yaong ibinaon ni Ana, kasama ang putol na kamay, sa tapat ng kanilang bintana.

Kinabukasan. Buong pagkamanghang nadungawan ni Ana ang isang naiibang halaman sa tapat ng kanilang durungawan. Ang mga bunga niyon ay dikit-dikit ay walang iniwan sa mga darili ni Aing. Sa dulo ng buwig ay nakalwait ang isang bagay na hugis-puso at alanganing pula at tila ang kulay.

Nalagot na ang pisi ng pagpapaumanhin ni Sela. “Ikaw kasi, e, masyadong tamad. Kung tumutulong ka bas a akin, di kikita tayo ng mabuti-buti. At sa gayo’y masusunod mo’ng iyong maibigan.”

“Ha! Diyata’t ibig mo pa akong alilain! Hindi maari! Ako ang nakatatanda, kaya ang gusto kong masusunod,” at pagwika nito’y nagtutumuling pumanaog si Amparo. Dumaan siya sa kanilang hardin at pumitas ng isang rosas bago nagtuloy sa pampang ng ilog.

Napaiyak na lamang si Marcela sa inasal ng kapatid. Lumuluha siyang napaluhod sa harap ng kanilang munting altar. Mataimtim siyang nanalangin. Hiniling niya sa Bathala na pagbaguhin ang ugali ng kapatid.

Samantala, wiling-wili si Amparo sa pananalamin sa malinaw na tubig. Inilagay pa niya sa ulo ang bulaklak ng rosas. Dumukwang siya sa pampang iupang makita ang kanyang anyo. Subalit siya’y nawalan ng panimbang. Tuloy-tuloy siyang nahulog sa malalim na ilog.

Nagkataon namang dumarating na noon si Marcela. Sumunod siya sa kapatid upang alamin kung ano ang ginagawa nito sa ilog. Kitang-kita niya ang pagkahulog ni Amparo.

“Paro! Paro…!’ sigaw niya habang lumalapit.

Ngunit hindi na lumitaw si Amparo. Nagpagibik si Sela. At nagdatingan naman ang maraming tao. May sumisid at kumapa sa ilalim ng tubig. Datapwat hindi na nakita ang lumubog na dalagita.

Habang nagmamasid at naghihintay ng mangyayari, nakita ng mga taong nasa pampang ang isang bulaklakna lumitaw sa lugar na kinalubugan ni Amparo. Ang bulaklak ay unti-unting gumalaw at nagbago ng anyo. Unti-unti ring nagkapakpak na may sar-saring kulay. At pagkuwa’y lumipad.

Sinundan nina Marcela ang mahiwagang bagay na lumilipad. Yao’y tuwirang nagtungo sa kanilang hardin, nagpalipat-lipat sa mga bulaklak, at humahalik sa bawat isa.

Kinabahan si Marcela. At wala sa sarili’y nabigkas niya ang “Paro! Paro….!

Ang marikit at makulay na insekto at tinawag ng mga tao na PARU-PARO - ang kasuyo ng mga bulaklak.

Nakakita nab a kayo ng dapo? Ito’y nabibilang sa pamilya ng halamang kumakapit at umaasa sa ibang puno. Sa loob ng maraming taon, ang dao’y nagkaroon ng iba’t-ibang hugis, kulay at anyo. Narito ang isang alamat ng dapo…

Maligaya ang mag-anak na Andoy. Bagaman hindi sila nakaririwasa ay di naman masasabing naghihikahos. Pagsasaka, pangmamanukan, at pangangahoy ang kanilang ikinabubuhay. Iisa ang supling ng angkan, si Mario, na mag-aanim nang taon.

Isang araw. Samantalang si Mang Andoy ay nasa gubat, na malapit lamang sa kanila, ay makarinig siya ng iyak. Isang batang halos kasinlaki’t kasinggulang ni Mario ang kanyang nakita. At hayun! Isang sawa ang handa nang lumingkis dito. Maliksing kumilos si Mang Andoy. Sa isang unat-kilikiling taga’y napigtas niya ang ulo ng nakabiting sawa.

Daproso ang pangalan ng bata, ulila nang lubos, at nabubuhay nang pagayun-gayon lamang. Sa habag ng butihing mag-anak ay inampon na nila ito.

Nagmahalan namang parang tunay na magkapatid si Mario at si Dapo – ang palayaw na kanilang ibinigay.

Maraming taon ang dumaan. Sabay na nagbinata ang dalawa. Minsan, sa kanilang pamamasyal sa bayan ay nakilala nila si Aida, isang magandang binibining pinipintuho ng maraming binata.

“Liligawan ko si Aida. At oras na umoo’y pakakasal kami. Anong palagay mo, ha, Dapo?” isang gabi’y naihayag ni Mario sa kapatid.

“Ha! E, bakit? Oo! Sigi!” ang di-magkandatutong bigkas ni Dapo.

Sa halip matuwa’y nalungkot si Dapo. Umiibig din siya kay Aida. Ang totoo’y napagtapatan na iya ito. Subalit si Mario rin ang naging mapalad. Isang maitim na balak ang nagsupling sa puso ni Dapo.

Lumipas ang maraming araw. Maligaya si Aida sa piling ni Mario at ng mga biyenan. Sa isang dako naman ay patuloy si Dapo sa lihim na paghahanda.

Isang umaga, sa loob ng gubat. Matiwasay si Mariong namumulot ng mga tuyong sanga nang bigla na lamang siyang paluin ni Dapo sa ulo. Nalugmok siya’t nawalan ng malay-tao.

“A, sa wakas ay masasarili ko na rin si Aida!” anang traidor na umasang lalamunin si Mario ng naglisaw na hayop sa gubat. Nagtutumulin siyang umuwi. At pagdaka’y tinangkang pagsamantalahan si Aida.

Nanlaban ang nabiglang si Aida. Sumaklolo ang mag-asawang Andoy. Subalit walang pakudangang pinatay ni Dapo ang dalawang kulang-palad na matanda. Tumakas si Aida at nagtago sa gubat. Ngunit nasundan din siya ng halimaw na si Dapo. Masusukol n asana siya ang isang sawang-bitin ang kagyat na pumulupot sa katawan ng hudas. Bangkay na si Dapo nang masadlak sa isang malakin sanga. Napaluha rin si Aida. At pagkuwa’y lumayong litung-lito. Sa paglalakad niya’y anuba’t nasumpungan ang nakabulagtang asawa. Pinagyaman niya si Mario. Nang matauhan ito’y tinungo nila ang punong kinasadlakan ng bangkay ni Dapo.

Nagtaka sila. Wala na roon ang katawan ni Dapo. Sa halip ay isang halamang may tila-ahas na ugat na nagyuyumakap sa sanga ang kanilang natingala. Hindi nila makuro ang kanilang nakita.

Lalong nanggilalas ang mag-asawa nang pagkaraan ng ilang linggo’y nakita nilang napakalago na ang halamang nakisuno lamang. Tigib yaon ng mala-ahas na mga ugat na nakapulupot sa buong katawan ng punong ngayo’y unti-unting nang namamatay.

“Ang halamang iyan ang katauhan ni Daproso – nakikisuno, lumilingkis, at pumapatay!” patalinghagang nasabi ni Mario sa asawa.

Mula noo’y lumaganap na ang kakaibang halamang itong kinatatakutan at pinangingilagan ng ibang puno. At mula noo’y nakilala na rin sa tawag na DAPO.

BAKIT UMAAKYAT SA HALAMAN ANG SUSO

Di-umano, noong bata pa ang daigdig, ang mga hayop ay sama-samang naninirahan sa isang bayan-bayanan. Sa isang munting bahay ay nagkasundong magsama ang magkakaibigang dalag, tutubi, putakti, at suso.

Napagkaisahan ng apat na hatiin ang mga gawaing-bahay nang ayon sa kani-kanilang lakas at kakayahan. Si Dalag, na siyang pinakamaliit at pinakamalakas sa kanila, ang ginawang pinakapuno ng sambayanan. Bilang puno’y tungkulin niyang humanap ng kanilang pagkain.

Si Tutubi ang nahirang na maging sugo sapagkat siya ang pinakamatulin sa kanilang lahat.

Dahil naman sa kanyang kamandag na kagat, si Putakti ang napiling maging tanod. Bukod sa pagiging bantay, siya rin ang magkukumpuni ng anumang sira ng pira-pirasong lupa at iba pang sangkap sa bahay.

Si Suso ang naatasang maging tagapagluto dala ng kabagalan.

Isang araw ay maagang humanap si Dalag ng kanilang maiuulam. Sa paglangoy niya nang paroo’t parito sa pagitan ng mga halamang-tubig ay nakatanaw siya ng isang bagay na gumagalaw sa ibabaw ng tubig. Lumapit siya at nakitang isang matabang palaka ang kumakawag. “Aba, kapalaran ko na iot!” ang naibulong ng Dalag. “Makapag-uulam kami ng masarap.!” At pagkasabi nito’y buong bilis na sinagpang ang palaka. Mariin at mahigpit ang ginawa niyang kagat upang hindi makawala ang huli. At siya’y lumangoy na pauwi.

Subalit, laking kasawian. Isa palang munting kawit na may sima ang nakakabit sa palaka. Anumang palag ang kanyang gawin ay hindi siya makahulagpos sa tagang tumimo sa kanyang ngalangala. Di nagtagal ay may dumating na isang mangingisda. Dinakma siya at isinilid sa buslo. At pagdating sa kanyang kubo’y iniluto ng mangingisda si Dalag.

Mangyari pa, nainip sa paghihintay ang mga kasambahay ni Dalag. Sa pag-aakalang naligaw lamang, inatasan ng magkakasama si Tutubi upang siya’y hanapin.

Bago lumakad ay mahabang oras munang inayos ni Tutubi ang kanyang kurbata. Lipad dito, lipad doon ang kanyang ginawa. Sa paghahanap niya’y nakita si Bolasi, isang isdang labas-masok ang bural na labi. Nagalit si Tutubi. Akala niya’y pinagtatawanan ni Bolasi ang kanyang kurbata. Inisip niyang baka maluwag ang pagkakatali ng kurbata kaya hinigpitan ito. Gayunman’y patuloy pa rin ang pagtawa ni Bolasi tuwi silang magkakaharap. Sa gayo’y patuloy rin ang paghigpit ni Tutubi sa kanyang kurbata. Sa kahihigpit niya’y naputol ang kanyang leeg.

Dalawang araw na ang nakararaan ay wala pa rin si Dalag at si Tutubi. Gutom na gutom na si Putakti at si Suso. Si Putakti ang higit na nakakaawa sapagkat hindi maaaring kumain ng putik na tulad ni Suso. Nang sukdulan na ang kanyang kagutuman ay lumipad si Putakti upang hanapin si Dalag at si Tutubi. Naging maliit na maliit na ang kanyang baywang dahil sa patuloy niyang paghihigpit ng sinturon. Habang lumilipad ay pahapdi ng pahapdi ang kalam ng kanyang sikmura. Dahil sa paghihigpit niya ng sinturon, siya ay namatay.

Napag-isa si Suso. Tinangka niyang hanapin ang mga kasama. Habang daa’y lumuluha siya. Sa paghahanap niya’y putik lamang ang kanyang kinakain. Tuwing makakikita siya ng puno ng damo o kaya’y tangkay ng anumang halamang-tubig ay pagapang niyang aakyatin. At siya’y tatanaw sa buogn paligid. Buo ang kanyang pag-asang makikita ang sinuman sa mga kaibigang nawawala.

Hanggang sa ngayon, ang mga Suso’y patuloy na naghahanap na lumuluha. Ang malagkit at malapot nilang luha’y nakaguhit sa kanilang dinaraanan. At tuwi namang makatatagpo ng puno ang damo o halamang nakaungos sa ibabaw ng tubig ay inaakyat ito. At mula rito’y tatanaw sa lahat ng dako sa pagbabasakaling masumpungan an pinaghahanap ng mga kasambahay.

MANILA, Philippines—Filipinos have swamped a new Facebook page to offer words of advice and caution for their next president-apparent, Senator Benigno Aquino III—telling him he should choose upright Cabinet members and also quit smoking.

Aquino's promise to wage war against rampant corruption that has plagued the Philippines has raised hopes, especially among young who made up almost half the voters in Monday's elections.

Aquino, a 50-year-old lawmaker, was headed for a landslide victory, largely campaigning on a family name and promising to follow the legacy of his parents, who are regarded as heroes in the country's democratic struggle against the dictatorship of Ferdinand Marcos.

More than 26,741have visited the Facebook site, "Dear Noynoy Aquino," and indicated they "like" it. 9-year old plane crash survivor going home

The 9-year-old boy who was the lone survivor of a plane crash that killed 103 people in Libya plans to return to the Netherlands on Saturday, the Dutch Foreign Ministry said Friday.

He is scheduled to leave Tripoli, Libya, at 10 a.m. Saturday and fly home with an aunt and uncle, as well as a doctor, the ministry said in a statement.

Ruben van Assouw suffered multiple fractures to his legs and underwent surgery at Al Khadra Hospital, said a doctor who declined to give her name.

Both of Ruben's parents and a brother were killed in the crash, a Foreign Ministry spokesperson said.

Acting on a request from the boy's relatives, authorities do not plan to say where the plane will land, and the media will not be present when it does, the ministry statement said.

"His relatives have appealed to the media to exercise restraint and to leave Ruben and his family in peace at this difficult time," it said.

Authorities said Ruben was the only survivor after an Afriqiyah Airways plane crashed at 6 a.m. Wednesday.

The boy's aunt and uncle arrived in Tripoli to visit him Thursday.

Saif al Islam Gadhafi, the second eldest son of Libyan leader Col. Moammar Gadhafi, visited the boy in the hospital along with airline chairman Capt. Sabri Shadi, according to a statement on Afriqiyah Airways' website.

More than two thirds of the passengers killed in the plane crash were Dutch, the foreign ministry said. Passengers from Libya, South Africa, Belgium, Austria, Germany, France, Zimbabwe and Britain were also among the victims, the airline said on its website.

The plane, an Airbus A330-200, departed Johannesburg, South Africa, and was at the end of its nearly nine-hour flight when it crashed.

Officials recovered the plane's flight data recorder, but investigators are still trying to determine what caused the crash.

In recent interviews, Aquino has spoken up about his plans to raise revenue, cut spending and investigate corruption allegations against President Arroyo and her official family. He admitted that he is still getting used to life as a public figure and has yet to decide if he will quit smoking.

The revelation doused speculation that Soledad would be a "First Girlfriend" to the still unmarried candidate when he becomes president. Official protocol also does not grant an official title to the girlfriend of a sitting president.

Three unmarried chief executives

Columnist Manolo Quezon said at least three unmarried people have served as the country's chief executive.

During the American occupation, US President Franklin Roosevelt appointed Detroit Mayor Frank Murphy as governor-general of the Philippines in 1933. Since he was unmarried, Murphy's sister stood as First Lady during official functions.

Elpidio Quirino was already a widower when he won the presidency in 1948. His daughter, Vicky, stood as First Lady.

Finally, Corazon Aquino, mother of Noynoy Aquino, was a widow when she became president in 1986.

Quezon said an unmarried president is not unheard-of in political circles, pointing out that Noynoy's own mother did not have a spouse to escort her during state functions.

He added that being single could help Aquino avoid the controversies hurled against the spouses of Philippine Presidents Ferdinand Marcos and Gloria Arroyo.

So far, none of Aquino's sisters have shown any interest in being First Lady of Malacañang if their brother is President.

Aquino's sister, Viel, said the entire family is supportive of Aquino's relationship with Soledad. She added, however, that their brother is too busy with the campaign to even think about marriage.

School in China attacks children as young as 3

HANZHONG, China (AP) – Children as young as 3 years old were among the victims targeted in an attack at a kindergarten in northwestern China that killed seven toddlers and two adults, a doctor said Thursday.

The attacker who charged into the kindergarten Wednesday and hacked at his victims with a cleaver was also a familiar figure to them, said another doctor. The killer, 48-year-old Wu Huanming, committed suicide at home following the attack.

The assault, which left 11 other children hospitalized, was China's fifth such school rampage in less than two months, and occurred despite heightened security countrywide, with gates and cameras installed at some schools and additional police and guards posted at entrances.

The attacks have raised concerns about the rising emotional stress in China's high-pressure, rapidly changing society, along with a dire lack of infrastructure to diagnose and treat severe mental illness.

It was not clear if security had been increased at the private Shengshui Temple Kindergartens on the rural outskirts of Hanzhong, an industrial city of nearly 4 million people. Images taken from local TV and posted online portrayed the school, which only had about 20 students, as a tumble-down, two-story farmhouse.

"We've never seen anything like this before, never," said Zhao Fangling, a doctor overseeing care for six of the most seriously wounded survivors at the 3201 Hospital in Hanzhong. The other five survivors were being treated at a separate hospital.

The four boys and two girls under Zhao's care were between the ages of 3 and 6-1/2. He said they were in stable condition in intensive care with head wounds.

"When we saw the mothers in pain who had lost their children, all of us were in tears," said Zhao, himself visibly shaken.

Another hospital official, Cui Xiangbin, said the killer was known to the children.

"The children all knew him, they saw him every day. I can't describe how it made me feel when I heard about the scene, I felt terrified and my heart went cold," Cui said.

The carnage started as class was beginning Wednesday, the local government said.

It said Wu entered the kindergarten and killed school administrator Wu Hongying and a student on the spot, then began hacking at the 18 others, according to a city government statement.

Six students and Wu Hongying's 80-year-old mother died later in the hospital of their wounds, it said. None of the 11 hospitalized survivors was in immediate danger.

Wu is a common Chinese surname, and it wasn't clear if the assailant and administrator were related.

Citing the police, the official Xinhua News Agency said Wu Huanming had rented his house to Wu Hongying for the kindergarten without government approval. He then demanded the property back, but Wu Hongying had asked to hold onto it until the children went on summer vacation.

Sociologists say the recent attacks that have left 17 dead and scores wounded reflect the tragic consequences of ignoring mental illness and rising stress resulting from huge social inequalities in China's fast-changing society.

"The perpetrators have contracted a 'social psychological infectious disease' that shows itself in a desire to take revenge on society," said Zhou Xiaozheng of Beijing's Renmin University.

"They pick children as targets because they are the weakest and most vulnerable," Zhou said.

The recent attacks are classic "copycat crimes," the effects of which may be amplified by media coverage, Zhou said.

Boosting security at schools would provide only a temporary solution unless the root problems of social injustice and economic inequality are addressed, he said.

It's also difficult to protect so many places.

About 500 kindergartens, primary and high schools in Beijing have hired more than 2,000 professional security guards to increase safety, said He Gang, a police officer at the Beijing Public Security Bureau. Thousands more guards are needed for the city's remaining 4,500 kindergartens, primary and high schools, He said.

The government has sought to show it has the problem under control, mindful especially of worries among middle-class families who, limited in most cases to one child due to population control policies, invest huge amounts of money and effort to raise their offspring.

The Hanzhong city government vowed to "leave no stone unturned, learn from the mistakes, and strictly ensure nothing happens like this again."

The city government said about 2,000 police officers and security guards had been assigned to patrol public schools, kindergartens and surrounding areas beginning last week.

The string of assaults began with an attack on a primary school in March in the city of Nanping, where eight children were slashed to death by a former doctor with a history of mental health problems.

The man convicted for that crime was executed April 28, the same day a 33-year-old former teacher broke into a primary school in the southern city of Leizhou and wounded 15 students and a teacher with a knife.

The following day, in the city of Taixing, a 47-year-old unemployed man with a knife wounded 29 kindergarten students — five seriously — plus two teachers and a security guard.

Hours later, a farmer hit five elementary students with a hammer in the eastern city of Weifang before burning himself to death.

Bloodest day in Iraq: 100 people dead

BAGHDAD (AP) – A man with explosives strapped to his body blew himself up in a crowd, bombers struck a southern city and gunmen sprayed fire on security checkpoints in attacks Monday that killed at least 100 people — most of them in Shiite areas — in Iraq’s deadliest day this year.

Officials were quick to blame insurgents linked to al-Qaeda in Iraq for the shootings in the capital, saying the militants were redoubling efforts to destabilize the country at a time of political uncertainty over who will control the next government.

Shiite Vice President Adel Abdul-Mahdi stressed the importance of quickly forming a government that does not exclude any major political group to try to prevent insurgents from exploiting Iraq’s fragile security.

“The terrorist gangs perpetrated new assaults today on our people and armed forces,” he said. “We call on all political blocs to work seriously for the benefit of the country and ... start to form a national partnership government including all political parties without marginalizing any one.”

More than two months after the March 7 election, Iraq’s main political factions are still struggling to put together a ruling coalition. Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki’s Shiite bloc has tried to squeeze out election front-runner Ayad Allawi — a secular Shiite who was heavily backed by Sunnis — by forging an alliance last week with another religious Shiite coalition. The union, which is just four seats short of a majority in parliament, will likely lead to four more years of a government dominated by Shiites, much like the current one.

Sunni anger at Shiite domination of successive governments was a key reason behind the insurgency that sparked sectarian warfare in 2006 and 2007. If Allawi is perceived as not getting his fair share of power, that could in turn outrage the Sunnis who supported him and risk a resurgence of sectarian violence.

The relentless cascade of bombings and shootings — hitting at least 10 cities and towns as the day unfolded — also raised questions about whether Iraqi security forces can protect the country as the US prepares to withdraw half of its remaining 92,000 troops in Iraq over the next four months.

The US and Iraq have claimed major blows again al-Qaeda in Iraq over the last month — most notably the killings of two militant leaders Abu Omar al-Baghdadi and Abu Ayyub al-Masri in an April 18 raid on their safehouse near Saddam Hussein’s hometown of Tikrit.

But US Maj. Gen. Stephen Lanza, the top military spokesman in Iraq, said Monday’s attacks show “there is a threat out there that we have to be concerned about, and the threat is still capable.”

The violence began before dawn in Baghdad in a series of attacks against checkpoints and patrols, targeting security forces. Gunmen disguised as cleaners used weapons fixed with silencers to spray security forces with bullets. At least 10 people were killed.

Most of the day’s casualties were in two Shiite-dominated cities where wounded victims screamed their fury at the government for failing to protect them.

The worst violence hit the Shiite city of Hillah, the capital of Babil province 95 kilometers south of Baghdad. First, two parked car bombs near a textile factory exploded as workers were leaving the factory around midday, said Babil provincial police spokesman Maj. Muthana Khalid.

Then as rescuers and workers were trying to help the injured, a suicide attacker with explosives strapped to his body blew himself up in the crowd.

At least 45 people were killed and dozens more injured, according to Khalid and al-Hillah hospital director Zuhair al Khafaji.

“It was a horrible scene with human flesh and blood on the ground,” said Jassim Znad Abid, a taxi driver who lives in Hillah. “I saw dead people, some burned and crying, wounded people on the ground that was covered with pools of blood.”

Babil provincial Gov. Salman Nassir al-Zargani ordered flags lowered to half-staff and a three-day mourning period. In an interview with Iraqi state TV, he said he was informed Sunday that the factory was under threat, but cited too many security gaps across Babil to protect all sites he feared could be targeted.

“There are many fragile places especially in the north of Babil... and there are a lot of security gaps there,” he said. “So we are facing a daily challenge in Babil.”

Hillah has been the site of horrific bombings in the past, including blasts in 2007 that killed at least 120 people and a suicide car bomber in 2005 that killed 125 people, mostly police and national guard recruits.

In another Shiite city, the southern port of Basra, three bombs, including one that targeted a marketplace, killed at least 16 people, hospital and police officials said. Basra has been relatively quiet since the days when Shiite militias allied with Iran ruled the streets; al-Maliki, with heavy US support, routed the militias in 2008.

A pair of bombs struck the small town of Suwayrah, 40 kilometers south of Baghdad, killing 11. Three different bombings in the town of Abu Ghraib west of Baghdad that killed at least six people.

Twelve more were killed in five separate attacks stretching from the northern city of Mosul to the western city of Fallujah in Anbar province to the Shiite city of Musayyib south of Baghdad.

The attack in Mosul killed at least two people near a checkpoint run by Iraqi security forces, Kurdish security forces known as the peshmerga, and US troops. The joint checkpoints were set up earlier this year under US supervision as a way to get Iraqi and Kurdish forces working together in areas claimed by both the Kurds and Iraq’s federal government.

Noynoy keeps leading

Benigno Simeon “Noynoy” Aquino III, the son of Philippine democracy icon former President Corazon C. Aquino, maintained a wide lead Tuesday in the presidential elections after campaigning on a promise to restore the government's credibility by prosecuting corrupt officials.

As this developed, his bitter rival – Nacionalista Party (NP) standard-bearer Senator Manny Villar – as well as administration presidential bet former Defense Secretary Gilbert Teodoro Jr., Bagumbayan candidate Sen. Richard Gordon, and Ang Kapatiran standard-bearer JC delos Reyes all conceded to Aquino Tuesday.

Despite glitches with new computerized counting machines and violence that claimed at least lives, election officials hailed Monday's vote as a success in a country where poll fraud allegations have marred previous contests.

Senator Aquino, whose father was assassinated while opposing a dictatorship and whose mother led the "people power” revolt that restored freedoms, was leading the ninecandidate presidential race with 40.19 percent of the votes from about 78 percent of the precincts, while his closest rival, former President Joseph Estrada, had 25.46 percent.

There is no runoff in the Philippines, and whoever has the most votes is declared winner.

In his first public remarks after Monday's vote, Aquino thanked Filipinos for the huge support and said he would deliver on a campaign promise to fight corruption and government malaise.

“I will not steal, but I'll have the corrupt arrested,” Aquino told a news conference in his northern home province of Tarlac.

In a bid to save money, Aquino told The Associated Press that he will avoid foreign trips and trim the Cabinet, adding he hopes the days when Filipinos have to resort to street protests to address government ills are over. He added that he was seriously considering Teodoro for a Cabinet position.

Aquino's sudden political rise has bolstered hopes among his supporters for a clean leadership after nine years of a scandal-tainted administration that was rocked by coup attempts and protests.

He campaigned on a strong anti-graft platform, promising to start prosecuting corrupt officials within weeks of his election and restore integrity to Congress and the judiciary.

It was only after former President Corazon Aquino died of cancer last August that her son, a quiet 50-year-old lawmaker and bachelor, decided to run, spurred by the massive outpouring of national grief for the leader who helped oust longtime dictator Ferdinand Marcos in the 1986 “people power” revolt that restored democracy to the Philippines.

She had inherited the mantle of her husband, Benigno Aquino Jr., an opposition senator gunned down by soldiers at Manila's airport in 1983 upon return from U.S. exile to challenge Marcos.

Aquino's closest political lieutenant, former Education Secretary Florencio Abad, said he rode on the crest of a national yearning for an honest leader after corruption scandals under outgoing President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo.

“This means he really has to deal with the problem of corruption and deal with the people identified with nine years of corruption,” Abad told The Associated Press.

“The other thing that he needs to do is to translate the dividends of good governance into direct benefits for the poor – education, health, food, lower prices, jobs, basic services,” he said.

Villar concedes It was a fight well fought.

He said he respects the decision of the majority of the Filipinos who voted for his closest rival.

“Nagpasya na ang mamamayang Pilipino. Malinaw na sa kabila ng ating pagpupunyagi, hindi tayo nabiyayaan ng tagumpay sa halalan noong Lunes. Humaharap ako sa inyo ngayon upang tanggapin ang pasyang ito. Upang igalang ang boses ng sambayanang Pilipino,” Villar said. (The Filipino people have already made their decision. Some of Villar's staff were seen emotional after he made the announcement.

Villar was the first among the nine presidential candidates to concede defeat. Based on the latest Comelec tabulation Tuesday, Villar was still stuck at number three behind Sen. Aquino and Pwersa ng Masang Pilipino (PMP) candidate former President Joseph Estrada.

But Villar did not attempt to hide his displeasure over the outcome of his campaign.

He said he hopes that he would be given a chance to clear his name in the future.

“Ako ay naniniwala na sa darating na mga araw ako ay mabibigyan ng pagkakataon na linisin ang aking pangalan upang maliwanagan ang ating mga kababayan,” he said. “Iyan ay mahalaga sa akin higit sa anu pa man bagay,” he stressed. At the same time, the NP bet assured his colleagues that he would continually support them.

“For the rest of my life, I will remain their champion. Even if I was not lucky, my dream to end poverty will not stop. I will continue it even through other means,” he said in Filipino.

Villar also thanked his supporter and volunteers and his family whom he said made big sacrifices in support of his presidential bid.

He likewise thanked mediamen who covered him, saying he will never forget the three-month gruelling campaign which gave him the chance to mingle with our millions of his countrymen, especially those who are languishing in poverty.

He also did not forget to thank the Lord who, he said, guided and secured him from harm during the 90-day campaign period.

Meanwhile, the Commission on Elections (Comelec) lauded Villar for conceding to Sen. Aquino, saying it was an act of real statesmanship.

“The Commission expresses its deep admiration for Sen. Villar’s act of statesmanship in conceding the elections,” ComelecChairman Jose Melo said.

By right, he said, the senator could have insisted on seeing this contest through to the bitter end.

However, he chose not to do that; instead he chose to set aside personal ambition to sped up the process of political reunification and recovery this country needs to go through after these elections,” he added.

Melo also thanked Villar for his vote of confidence in the Automated Election System (AES).

Aquino leads results in Comelec tabulated

Liberal Party standard-bearer Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino III garnered the most number of votes based on the tabulated precinct results of the Commission on Elections (Comelec).

As of 9:45 p.m. Monday, Aquino got a total of 5,853, 537 votes or 40.44% out of the 38.25 % of votes.

Joseph “Erap” Estrada of the Pwersa ng Masang Pilipino (PMP) followed next with 3, 728, 723 votes (25.76%) while Sen. Manuel Villar of the Nacionalista Party got 2,024,119 votes (13.98%).

The Sinulog is an annual festival held on the third Sunday of January in Cebu City, Philippines. The festival honors the so called vision of the child Jesus, known as the Santo Niño (Holy Child), who used to be the patron Saint of the City of Cebu(since in the Catholic faith Jesus is not a saint, but God). It is a dance ritual that commemorates the Cebuano peoples Islamic and pagan origin, and their acceptance of Roman Catholicism.

The festival features a street parade with participants in bright colored costumes dancing to the rhythm of drums, trumpets and native gongs. Smaller versions of the festival are held in various parts of the province, also to celebrate and honor the Santo Niño. There is also a "Sinulog sa Kabataan" performed by the youths of Cebu a week before the parade. Recently, the festival has been promoted as a tourist attraction, with a contest featuring contingents from various parts of the country. The Sinulog Contest is usually held in the Cebu City Sports Complex.

The Dinagyang Festival is celebrated every fourth weekend of January to honor the Christianization of the natives and to respect the Holy Child Jesus. On this day, streets of Iloilo City will once again come alive as the Ilonggos celebrate the annual festivity. It is a very colorful parade coupled with a dramatization in honor of the patron Saint Sto. Niño as the object of performs offerings and prayers amidst the cracking of drums and shouts of "Viva Señor Santo Niño." The thundering of "Hala Bira" by the tribe members makes the celebration a lively one. It is also a very popular tagline used by Ilonggos to express their warm participation during the "Dinagyang" celebration. A tribute in honor of Señor Sto. Niño whom Ilonggos believe was very miraculous in times of famine and drought. Dinagyang is an annual event, when the whole town rejoices, shouting their pride of being an Ilonggo and telling their culture. It is a wonderful looking back to the past. It is not just a celebration, it is a religious evangelization. Going back to Iloilo is more like a past fulfilled and a looking forward for future celebrations. It is our culture. The Aeta culture. That's why it is painting the town black.

The Birth and Evolution of Dinagyang The root word is dagyang. In Ilonggo, it means to make happy. Dinagyang is the present progressive word of the Ilonggo word, meaning making merry or merry-making. A religious and cultural activity, it is a celebration of Ilonggos whose bodies are painted with black in effect to imitate the black, small and slender Negritos who are the aborigines of Panay. The warriors are dressed in fashionable and colorful Aeta costumes and dance artistically and rhythmically with complicated formations along with the loud thrashing and sound of drums. Before, Dinagyang was called Ati-atihan like that of the Kalibo festivity. History tells that it started when a replica of the image of Señor Sto. Niño was brought to the San Jose Parish Church in Iloilo from Cebu. The people of Iloilo honored the coming of the image and then became devotees. Until they made the day of the Image's arrival as his feast day which falls on the 4th Sunday of January. Since 1968, it was already considered a yearly celebration, culminated by a nine-day Novena, an Ati-ati contest and a fluvial procession on the last day.

Recognized now to the annual, socio-cultural-religious festival of Iloilo City, the word Dinagyang was made up by an old-timer, Ilonggo writer and radio broadcaster, the late Pacifico Sumagpao Sudario, and first used to name the festival when it was launched in 1977, to make it unique from other Ati-atihan celebrations.

Iloilo City's Dinagyang has its early beginnings in 1968, when a model of the image of Sr. Santo Ni¤o was brought from Cebu City to the San Jose Parish Church by Fr. Suplicio Ebderes, OSA with a delegation of Cofradia del Sto. Niño, Cebu members. The image and party were enthusiastically welcomed at Iloilo City by then parish priest of San Jose Church, Fr. Ambrosio Galindez, OSA, then Mayor Renerio Ticao, and the devotees of the Sto. Niño in Iloilo City. The image was brought to San Jose Parish Church and preserved there up to this time, where a novena in His honor is held every Friday. The climax of the nine-day novena was the Fluvial Procession.

In the early morning light of dawn, the respected Santo Niño image is borne on a decorative banca in a fluvial procession, starting from the mouth of the Iloilo River at Fort San Pedro, winding all the way to the Iloilo Provincial Capitol which stands on the bank of the Iloilo River.

If the festival had to be developed into a major tourist attraction, it would be so big in magnitude and the Confradia thought that it could no longer cope with the demands of a tourist come-on. The year 1976 also brought another feature of the festival. Street celebrations and audience participation were introduced and encouraged.

At that point, the Santo Niño is met by the Hermano-Hermana Mayor devotees, and Ati-atihan tribes. With the Santo Niño leading, the foot procession starts, passing through the main streets of the city and ending up at San Jose Church, where a high mass is then celebrated. As years went by, the celebration continued to be highlighted by a mass at San Jose Parish at the break of the dawn; by a "Kasadyahan" which is the opening event of the celebration, also a merrymaking but is a dramatized dance presentation about the Aeta's survival, the landing of the 10 Bornean Datus in Panay and the colonization; and by dances and more merry making which have become a tourist attraction. As more and more tribes from the barangays, schools and nearby towns and provinces participate, the contest became more competitive in terms of costumes, choreography and sounds. The tribes compete for the following Special Awards: Best in Discipline, Best in Costume, Best in Performance, Best in Music and Best in Choreography. These are aside from the major awards for the champion, first runner-up, second runner-up, third runner-up and fourth runner-up. Participating tribes learn to design artistically and with originality in making use of Ilonggo native materials like dried anahaw leaves, buri or coconut palm leaves and husks and other barks of Philippine trees. Choreography was studied and practices were kept secret. Sounds were seen as an authentic medium that keeps the tribes going in uniform. They also include a brief dramatization of how Christianity was brought to Panay and the arrival of the 10 Bornean Datus telling about the exchange of the Aetas of their land for the Borneans' Golden Salakot (native hat) and a long pearl necklace which is also parallel with the Kasadyahan celebration. During the celebration, people participate with the Kasadyahan. Some dressed in Aeta costumes, some paint their faces with black paint, some put on colored artificial tattoos and wear other Aeta ornaments. At night, there is public dancing on selected areas.

A colourful happening with celebrants who paint their faces in many different ways and who are dressed in the most exceptional costumes. The dancing on the rhythms of the drums makes this festival comparable with carnivals in Rio in Brazil! The Fiesta is celebrated in Kalibo on the island of Panay (Visayas) Philippines. The Origin of Ati-Atihan: In the thirteeenth century, long before the Spaniards came to the Philippines, light-skinned immigrants from the island of Borneo (Kalimantan) in Indonesia arrived on Panay. The local people of Panay, the Ati (negritos), a small and dark (black) kinky-haired people, sold them a small piece of land and allowed them to settle down in the lowlands. The Atis themselves, lived more upland in the mountains. One time the Ati people was in need of food because of a bad harvest in their homelands. They cam down to the lowland inhabitants to ask for some food. They danced and sang in gratitude for the helping hand. A real friendship was born and the Maraynon started to paint their faces black in honor of the Atis and took part in the fiesta.

Residence of Legaspi City, Philippines were treated to an overnight fireworks display that greeted Christmas day here at Mount Mayon spewed more lava and pyroclastic materials, prompting more people spending their Noche Buena at the top of this hill.

The spectacle has drawn many tourists to Lignon Hill, considered a view deck for Mayon Volcano, as good wheather and clear skies allowed a clear view of a burning lava flow on Christmas Eve.

Cars lined up at the foot of the hill waiting for their turn to enter the view deck since 10 cars can enter the narrow space of the hill at any given time.

a few meters away from the hill the Philvocs (Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology) lies its observatory.

The glowing red lava coming from the volcano can be seen in both sides oozing from the summit. Explosions was also heard intermitently. Giving tourist more excitement.

Mayon Volcano Could Erupt any days from now

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology (Philvocs) raised to alert level 4 last sunday afternoon out of the maximum of five alert levels. - meaning that the major eruption of Mayon Volcano is possible within days. Philvocs recomended an Extended Danger Zone from the Summit to eigth kilometers (southern sector) and seven kilometers (north sector) of Mayon Volcano in Albay Province, to ensure the safety of the public. Philvocs and Seismology said that near the Mayon Volcano increased in number and size in the past 24 hours, with tha total of 1,942 volcanic earthquakes detected. that's why they raised the alert level 4 from alert level 2 last friday morning. More than 9,200 families evacuated by the Provincial Disaster Coordinating Council to the Government Evacuation Center as of Monday morning, December 21, 2009. The Province is also one of the province in the Philippines visited by 22 typhoons this year including typhoon Ondoy and Peping which submerged large area of Northern Luzon, Philippines.

The Philvocs say that the Mayon Volcano is much safer than Mt. Pinatubo compared to their eruption.

In a press conference, Executive Secretary Eduardo Ermita announced Proclamation No. 1959 declaring a state of martial law and suspending the privilege of the writ of habeas corpus in the province of Maguindanao, except for certain areas identified as bailiwicks of the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) separatists. The declaration of martial law will lead to the arrests without warrants of other members of the Ampatuan family who have been linked to the November 23 massacre of 57 innocent civilians. The carnage drew both local and international condemnation. Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) Chief of Staff Gen. Victor Ibrado announced that joint police and military teams have taken into custody Maguindanao Gov. Andal Ampatuan Sr. and his son, Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (ARMM) Gov. Zaldy Ampatuan. Ibrado said Ampatuan Sr. was brought to a hospital in Davao City, while the ARMM governor was brought to General Santos City. As of posting, Maguindanao Vice Governor Akmad Ampatuan Sr. and Shariff Aguak Anwar Ampatuan have also been taken into custody. Former President Corazon Cojuangco Aquino has passed away. She was 76. Her son Sen. Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino III confirmed that she died of cardio-respiratory arrest at exactly 3:18 a.m. Saturday at the Makati Medical Center. Mrs. Aquino has been diagnosed with colon cancer early in 2008 and has been confined at the Makati Medical Center for more than a month. Mrs. Aquino, widow of Senator Benigno Aquino Jr., will be remembered as an icon of democracy, having led a military-backed popular revolt in 1986 that ousted a dictator who ruled the country for 20 years. At about 5 a.m. outside the hospital, Noynoy read a statement announcing the death of his mother. The statement read: "Our mother peacefully passed away at 3:18 a.m., August 1, 2009, of cardio-respiratory arrest. “She would have wanted to thank each and every one of you for all the prayers and your continued love and support. It was her wish for all of us to pray for one another and for our country. “Hinihiling po ng aming pamilya ang kaunting panahon para makasama namin ang aming mahal na ina. “Later today, we will be announcing further details of her wake para sa lahat ng ating mga minamahal na kababayan na nais magbigay ng respeto sa aming ina. Maraming salamat po.” President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo expressed her condolences to the family of the former President, Arroyo's press secretary said. The President is set to declare a week of national mourning, said Press Secretary Cerge Remonde in a live phone patch from the US where he is accompanying Arroyo who is on official visit there. Remonde said the President could cut short her trip but that they were going to discuss the matter when they get to New York, their next stop after Washington D.C. where she met President Barack Obama at the White House. Arroyo is expected to be back in Manila on August 5. Remonde also said that under the law, all presidents were entitled to a state funeral but added that this would be subject to the family's approval. Popular TV host Boy Abunda, a close friend of the Aquino family, told reporters on Saturday that the Aquinos were praying the Sorrowful Mystery of the Rosary when Cory gave her "last deep breath.” Abunda said all five children of Mrs. Aquino, and her close friends and relatives were at her bedside when the former leader passed away. After that last breath, Abunda said, Mrs. Aquino's children quietly cried. "Malungkot. Tahimik na nag-iiyakan. Tahimik, except for Kris who was very quiet," he said, referring to the youngest daughter of Mrs. Aquino. "Kris was very quiet. She was displaying such courage pero noong dindadala palabas mga labi ni Tita Cory... because you have to remember that Kris was in the hospital, Kris was by the side of her mother since July 20 hanggang sa mga oras na yun. Hanggang ngayon si Kris ay nasa tabi ng kanyang ina," Abunda said. He said a Mass, officiated by Fr. Catalino Arevalo, was held after Mrs. Aquino's death. Abunda said Arevalo is a very close friend of the former leader and had been officiating a Mass for her at the hospital. Last September 15, 2008, Ryle just turned 1, Ryle Galang is my cousin, he celebrated his first birthday in my favorite fastfood "Jolibee". It was indeed happy moments for his parents and brother Ryan. Many exciting games prepared by the jollibee crew.Spaghetti , burger, coke, ice cream, french fries were served to us. After we ate ,there were two surprised guests and they were JOLLIBEE and YUM. JOLLIBEE and YUM were only mascots but it was fun dancing with them.

After that exciting moment the party just ended and we went home. That was unforgetable to all the visitors, friends and especially to the Galang family.
